Epic makes more money than steam

epic makes more money than steam

Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of new PC game platforms try to make a dent in Steam’s market-dominating position. Epic Mnoey announced it’s having a go at the leader this morning with an upcoming platform, the Epic Games Store, that promises more developer-friendly publishing terms. That matches the revenue cut Epic already takes on development assets sold through the existing Unreal Marketplace, a cut the company recently lowered from 30 percent. Epic is keeping monsy for mre on specific launch date and game mofe details for its new store, but said in a release that «the store will launch soon with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac and will open up more broadly to additional games and other open platforms throughout The approval process for new games will «mostly focus on the technical side of things and general quality,» Sweeney said. Sweeney also told Ars Epic will «manually curate the Epic Games storefront rather than relying on algorithms or paid ads. To that end, Epic said the Store’s «Support-a-Creator» program will «connect developers epid over 10, creators, such as YouTube video makers and Twitch streamers,» to bring more exposure to listed titles. Epic isn’t the only company that has tried to take on Steam in recent months. Popular gaming-focused social network Discord launched its own curated game store earlier this yearincluding a number of timed exclusive «first on Discord» indie games. And browser-focused gaming network Kongregate recently launched its own PC gaming store where stesm can receive discounts on games and other real-world rewards for earning in-game achievements. For one, the company has already grown Fortnite into one of the most popular games in the world without koney help of third-party platforms like Steam or Google’s Play store on Android. And while the launch will just include a basic storefront, Sweeney said Epic «plan[s] to take more of the online features we built for our own games, and open them up to other developers.

Epic made quite a few ripples when it opened its digital game store back in December But those ripples amassed into a full-on tidal wave when Epic announced that big-name shooter Metro Exodus would be exclusive to the Epic Game Store until Some called it a dirty trick, others called it good business. Either way, it made using the Epic Store that bit less avoidable. So, now that the Epic Store has brute-forced its way into our task bars, we decided to compare it with Steam — the de facto platform of PC gaming. The Steam Store is a bit like a vast warehouse that just so happens to have a few of its most popular products in front of the shutters. In the center, you have the big flashy thumbnails for various games, most of which are tailored based on what you play. Early Access games are clearly labelled, with their store pages prioritizing update info and community discussion. Meanwhile, the Epic Games Store storefront starts strong. Across the top there is a banner featuring a free game and a notification saying that users will get another free game every two weeks — a program that’s still going strong even in It feels too busy, with games failing to stand out from each other, and no way of finding a genre or specific game other than by scrolling down the page. If we were an indie developer with an exclusive game on the Epic Games Store — like Rebel Galaxy Outlaw or Untitled Goose Game — we’d be worried about a lack of exposure.

Another concern is that Early Access labelling is unclear. An early access game should really foreground updates, news and dev diaries, none of which is there at the moment. DRM Digital Rights Management is the method of copyright protection for digital games, helping to prevent people from playing games they haven’t paid for. If you want to run a game through its executable file, or a Windows shortcut to it, it will automatically open Steam at the same time as opening the game. Of the three games we’ve tested — Fortnite, Subnautica and the Jackbox Collection — each one seems to play by its own rules. This will connect through the game through the Epic Portal without requiring the Epic app. Fortnite, meanwhile, has the tightest DRM of the games we tested. Steam is built for a lot of games, and its no-nonsense default library view reflects that, showing a long list of your games in a pane. Custom categories let you organize games into as many different lists as you want.

Valve is definitely not working on ‘Left 4 Dead 3’

Slashdot is powered by your submissions , so send in your scoop. Some crappy reviewer wrote it using grammarly, accepting every correction, and then the «editor» didn’t even bother to check. Actually I just made a typo because I posted it at 1am while drinking. I didn’t actually spell check the submission at all. It’s Fortnite: Battle Royale. Fortnite: Save the World was the original game. It sucked assssssssssssssss. Then they turned it into a Battle Royale and while it still sucks asssssssssssss, it’s popular among tweens. I guess they also have Fortnite: Creative Mode now or soon. It does help though that the language is very forgiving, with meaning easily conveyed even when spelling and grammar are absent. What the hell does it mean for a game review to be bombed positively on another platform?!

Shiny, happy storefronts

Valve, once unassailable, suddenly seemed very vulnerable. Flush with Fortnite money, Epic provided the first real competition to Steam since its inception 15 years prior. Grateful, not because Valve fended off the newcomer and solidified its own position, but because Epic spurred Valve out of complacency. The Epic Games Store is better now—but so is Steam. It only needs to convince developers. But for the biggest PC releases? Why buy elsewhere if you already owned a few dozen or few hundred games through Steam? Players would follow. Not all of them, of course, but enough to make the platform viable. Epic started the year giving away a single game every two weeks. Then in June it switched to a free game every week.

But then again I wonder if they just don’t care how much money they make off these exclusive deals since they make the majority of there income from Fortnite so they can just do whatever they want I guess. I am not interested in games, that are not on steam, even if they are free. People invest a lot of money and time into their steam profiles, they are not just gonna to switch.

It is not just about games. There are already many stores like GOG, Ubisoft, etc, but they fail to deliver. Devs might like Epic store, but I doubt, that most players. Though it might bring steam prices. TairikuOkamiDec 7, Joined: Mar 17, Posts: Location: Europe.

They Epic are just starting, have to give them time, everyone want’s instance results now a days. I like that Fhan might stean competition in the future, might make Steam better. Some are «drugged and drunk soldiers» in reality today, especially drugged.

Epic Games threw a grenade into the world of digital distribution when it revealed its own storefront late last year, complete with a better deal for developers than anything offered by Steam, the longstanding king of PC gaming. This has given Epic an edge, and the company has lured a slew of high-profile developers away from Steam, complete with plans to launch their titles exclusively on the Epic Games Store. Many of these games will eventually hit Steam and other platforms, but they’ll be exclusive to the Epic store for a long while. However, this could all change. Neither of these franchises are currently available on Steam.

Why Epic Games Store Exclusive Are Good For Developers

Valve, the company behind Steam, has long been unchallenged in the digital marketplace and its revenue split is a testament to this fact. Just before the Epic Games Store was announced, Valve revealed a new revenue ratio for Steam — but it only affects a handful of ultra-successful developers. Of course, this move doesn’t do much to appease independent and mid-tier developers, who can earn 88 percent of all revenue on the Epic Games Store. Steam is still a clear leader in digital distribution, offering more games than any other PC platform and serving as an entrenched, trusted service for millions of players worldwide. However, the Epic Games Store’s existence has already pushed Valve to update its revenue-sharing policies, if only slightly, and Sweeney’s challenge could look appealing as Steam attempts to stay on top.
